 本品はほぼ円柱形を呈し、長さ30～100cm、径0.7～2cmで、ところどころに小さい側根の基部を付け、根頭部の近くはねじれている。外面は淡灰黄色～淡褐黄色で、不規則なあらい縦じわと横長の皮目ようの模様がある。折りにくく、折面は繊維性である。横切面をルーぺ視するとき、最外層は周皮で、皮部は淡黄白色、木部は淡黄色、形成層付近はやや褐色を帯びる。皮部の厚さは木部の径の約1/3～1/2で、細いものでは木部から皮部にわたって白色の放射組織が認められるが、太いものではしばしば放射状の裂け目となっている。通例、髄は認めない。
 本品は弱いにおいがあり、味は甘い。
 純度試験の項では、次のように定められている。

 本品の縦切片を鏡検するとき、繊維束の外辺にシュウ酸カルシウムの単晶を含む結晶細胞列を認めない。
