地黄はゴマノハグサ科のアカヤジオウ [[Species:Rehmannia|''Rehmannia glutinosa'' Liboschitz var. ''purpurea'' Makino]] または カイケイジオウ ''Rehmannia glutinosa'' Liboschitz の根を基原とする。調製方法により呼び名が異なり、それぞれ薬性・薬効が異なるとされており、また日本と中国では表記に違いもある。新鮮な根を水洗したものは日本では「生地黄（ナマジオウ）」、中国では「鮮地黄」、そのまま乾燥したものは日本では「乾地黄」、中国では修治していないとの意味で「生地黄（ショウジオウ）」または「生地（セイジ）」、蒸したものは日本・中国ともに「熟地黄（ジュクジオウ）」または「熟地（ジュクチ）」と呼ばれる。以前の市場流通品は中国産の主に河南省旧懐慶府に産するものであったが、現在は山西省の産出量が一番多い。北海道でも生地黄（ナマジオウ）の生産が行われており基原はカイケイジオウである。{{CrudeDrug/Tochimoto}}
