[edit] Admission Information
There are two ways to pursue your graduate study in Arita Laboratory. The Japanese names of the Ph. D. degree are different, but all others (including tuition fee) are the same.
- Department of Computational Biology, Graduate School of Frontier Sciences, The Univ of Tokyo
- The entrance exam is a mixture of computer science, molecular biology, and bioinformatics.
- The thesis theme should be related to bioinformatics.
- Department of Biophysics and Biochemistry, Graduate School of Science, The Univ of Tokyo
- The entrance exam is basically molecular biology and biochemistry.
- The thesis theme should be related to biology.

[edit] Scholarships
For international students, scholarship is truly necessary. Without any financial aid, it is impossible to complete your graduate study in Japan. The best one is Monbukagakusho (MEXT) Scholarship from the Japanese Government. You will be supported 5 years plus a language course and the tuition fee will be exempted throughout your study. Please consult with your local Japan Embassy for the selection information.

2013 University Recommended MEXT Scholarship For “Frontier Science Research Centers”, is currently open for application.
The number of scholarship grantees per year is as follows: Master degree program: 10 students Doctoral degree program: 10 students Monthly stipend: Master: 144,000 yen Doctoral: 145,000 yen (An additional monthly stipend of 2,000 or 3,000 yen may be granted to the students undertaking study or research in some designated regions of the country.) School Fees: Enrollment and tuition fee will be exempted.
Once you belong to my laboratory, you are eligible for RIKEN Junior Research Associate Program (JRA). This program is highly recommended for doctorate course students, but not available for master course students.

On the website there is a description about the professors' recommendation for the MEXT scholarship, but I have no academic exchange program with foreign universities. There is no way to recommend visiting students for the scholarship in my laboratory.
[edit] Living in Tokyo
The living cost in Tokyo is high. A standard studio apartment costs around 1000 USD/month. For actual prices, please see this table provided in the UTRIP site. For Ph. D. candidates, we can offer some support through Teaching Assistant or Research Assistant, but for master course students, there are not enough support programs. Part-time job is generally forbidden for international students (less than 30 hours / month).

[edit] Applying sholarships after enrollment
If you plan to apply any scholarship after enrollment, keep in mind that you need substantial amount of money. Also it is difficult to obtain your visa to enter Japan. For these reasons, I do recommend you to apply for the MEXT (Monbukagakusho) scholarship. Once selected, you can take a language course (6 months) for free on campus, entrance and tuition fee are waived, and you will obtain monthly stipend.
[edit] Post-doc Positions
My laboratory is looking for a postdoc with expertise in
- programming languages (preferably Java and Cpp), and
- at least one of chemometrics, molecular biology, analytical chemistry, or bioinformatics.
