Marigolds is originally from Mexico. African marigolds (Tagetes erecta) is spread into North Africa through Spain in the 16th century, and later re-imported to Europe. French marigolds (Tagetes patula) is imported into the royal garden of king Francis (Paris) and then spread into Europe. It came to Japan in early Edo era, and is described in a gardening book in 1695. The flower pigments are lutein (88%), zeaxanthin (5%) and other carotenoids (7%)

• Tagetes L.

キク科 【属名】タゲテス;センジュギク属;マンジュギク属 marigold 約30種があるといわれ、メキシコを中心とする中米に分布する。一年草または多年草。葉と総苞に油腺があり、独特の強い臭気をもつ。頭状花序は黄橙色。

キク科 センジュギク(千寿菊);マンジュギク(万寿菊);アフリカンマリーゴールド African marigold; big marigold; marigold; Aztec marigold; tall marigold 茎は太く直立する。園芸種では頭花が重弁化して、径10cmを超えるものもある。

キク科 フレンチマリーゴールド;クジャクソウ French marigold 高さ50cm未満で、やや横張りに枝を広げ、小輪の花を群開させる。花径は3～6cm。本種はT.erectaとT.tenuifoliaとの復2倍体によって生じたものとされている。
